The word “compostableware” is becoming increasingly common. Whether it’s your to go box, or the lidded soup bowl, or the bio plastic cups for your drinks. And yet, something’s not quite right. That soup bowl starts to bend. The to go box gets soggy. The cup is made from corn, which, GMO or not, is unsustainable and responsible for many issues both agricultural and economic in our society today.
And that’s just the beginning.
Many of those benign looking bowls and plates utilize chemical binders (as much as 40% by weight) to hold their shape, and when exposed to heat, begin to release those binders into what you eat. Well then, what can an environmentally conscious eater of food do? One option that I recently learned of is Areca plates.
Tall areca palms swaying in the breeze give the coastline of various parts of India its fabled beauty but farmers in the region use every part of this native species to augment their income. Enterprising locals have set up manufacturing units to turn the dry leaves of the areca palm (betel nut) tree into eco-friendly plates, which have buyers across the world.
The huge palm fronds, or leaves, that drop to the ground every few weeks are gathered assiduously by farmers in various parts of India and south Asia.
Areca leaves are 100% Biodegradable and eco friendly to use. The shedded leaves are used to make plates and other products without chopping the trees. The Tableware made from Areca leaves are Hygienic, leak proof, durable , microwavable, non-toxic , stiff and light weight compared to other alternatives.
According to, World Economic Forum globally we are discarding more than 8 million tonnes of plastic waste into the ocean every year. Marine pollution is becoming a global problem. This destroys whole ecosystems. Cleaning the oceans is a major problem. 80% of marine pollution starts on land. We must change our way of consumption to minimize this. One step is by using eco-friendly products that are sustainable. Areca leaf based plates are completely compostable and sustainable as shown in the image below.
Its not much about the future anymore. Its HERE AND NOW. We are now directly impacted already - let us resolve it by working together towards a sustainable future.
